Where Philanthropy Fuels Conservation

Wild About Wildlife supports the Refuge Association’s South Florida Urban Wildlife Refuge Project—a regional initiative that engages students, educators, and communities through hands-on environmental experiences. Together, we help fund programs that restore habitats, promote civic engagement, and expand access to nature across South Florida.

Through immersive experiences in national wildlife refuges and local green spaces, students don’t just learn about nature—they discover their place within it. These programs foster confidence, connection, and stewardship while inspiring future conservation leaders.

By mobilizing philanthropy through events and partnerships, Wild About Wildlife plays a vital role in sustaining this work—strengthening environmental education and conservation opportunities throughout Palm Beach County.

Programs of the National Wildlife Refuge Association in South Florida:

Pocket Refuges

Small native-plant gardens designed to restore habitat and connect neighborhoods to nature. Working with partners like schools and parks, the Refuge Association provides plants, volunteers, and guidance to create pollinator-friendly spaces that encourage community participation and environmental awareness.

Floating Wetlands

Floating treatment wetlands act as living laboratories — natural water-filtration systems built with native plants that clean local waterways, create habitat, and provide outdoor learning spaces for students. These scalable projects address South Florida’s water-quality challenges while inspiring stewardship through hands-on science.

Conservation Ranger Camp

A week-long immersive experience co-designed by the National Wildlife Refuge Association, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and local partners. Each summer, high-school students explore conservation careers, learn field skills alongside rangers and biologists, and discover how they can make a difference in protecting South Florida’s ecosystems.

About the National Wildlife Refuge Association

As the only nonprofit solely dedicated to advocating on behalf of the National Wildlife Refuge System, the National Wildlife Refuge Association protects, promotes, and enhances America’s wildlife heritage through strategic programs that address refuge funding, management, and public engagement.

In South Florida, the Refuge Association leads the South Florida Urban Wildlife Refuge Project — a collaboration with the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge and local partners. This initiative provides access to wildlife refuges and public lands, fosters environmental education, and supports green infrastructure and career pathways in conservation.
